Smartphones don’t Kill People, Cars Do

Well, the title is not technically wrong, but like so many things Gawker, it’s a bit disingenuous. Cars kill people when both are in the same place at the same time. You can do this by removing the cars, by removing the pedestrians, or by either party taking more effort to not be in the same place as the other. I personally think that the third option is the most practical and the most consistent with our philosophy of personal freedom. But then, I tend to place an inordinate emphasis on personal responsibility by modern society’s standards.

Guns don’t kill people, bullets do. Or, wait, is it gunpowder? No, sorry, I forgot, it’s anvils. Falling anvils kill people.

Agreed. Disingenuous is the right word, because the easy conclusion to draw from her article is simply that people kill people. If you’re driving a 2 ton chunk of metal down the road at 50mph and you’re looking at your cell phone, YOU are the problem. The car and the cell phone are not the issue.

She’s an urbanite who doesn’t seem to have any concept of life outside of a densely-populated urban center. As a result, she believes that her opinions on what would be best for that environment are universally applicable.

Oh my god.
So stop blaming smartphones or “distracted walking” for the real problem: Cheap gas is putting more drivers on the streets than ever , and cities aren’t doing enough to keep the people on those streets safe .

“And unlike drivers, walkers are allowed to look at their phones while they walk—they aren’t endangering other lives.”
This line is where I stopped reading. Technically, there are no laws against distracted walking, but it boggles my mind that Alissa legitimately thinks it’s permissible to obliviously walk into traffic and never be at fault.
But I do get her point that: if we improve public transport, fewer people will need to drive, and therefore pedestrians have fewer cars to worry about. That’s a fair statement (although I can think of a few dozen more important reasons why we should improve public transit). But she phrases her article in such a way that the response is completely argumentative and nonconstructive.

It argues for the lack of human thought needs to be rethought by banning cars all together. Did she realize a bicycle going at 30 mph can also kill someone who is distracted on their phone? How about a rogue bus driver? Maybe an autonomous car that has lost its bearings and crashed into a person? It’s an idiotic article

Yeah, clearly it’s those evil cars that are the problem. I mean its not like fatalities caused by plenty of distracted driving to the point where states like mine have passed laws to crack down on it are the issue, no its all those pesky cars that are doing it. Because, y’know, car accidents were such a HUGE epidemic before the cellphone was able to fit in your pocket. But like all people of her kind, she’s more willing to blame an inanimate fucking object rather than take some personal responsibility, because that would make her FEEL bad.
By the way, if you want your point to have more tangent thought than an ignorant opinion piece. Maybe don’t link to your own ignorant articles that support your own ignorant biased views. I know its fun to jerk off to yourself, but most people don't want to see you do it.

5 thousand pedestrians dead each year. When compared with the # of crossings happening each year, I think this is pretty damned good. Rework the most dangerous intersections, but otherwise this isn’t a problem!

She realized that she can get more clicks by pissing off car people. Car people normally wouldn’t click on her incredibly shitty articles, but by making these hate articles, people click on her article to comment about how they hate it. More clicks on her article = more money for her.
I have adblock, so probably no money for Gawker when I click on her articles by accident thankfully..
